Well, caf, I have some references for you, tho' not as many as I would like because I've had a rather heavy work schedule. Before I give them, however, I'd like to make it clear that I'm not trying to be assaulting, insulting, or even confrontational. I thought that this was a forum where views could be presented and shared in good will, and that's what I've attempted to do in this exchange. I just don't think that Zondervan is a very scholarly publisher, tending rather toward the extremist and even sensationalistic, and I will admit that I have a pre-formed opinion of the Dictionary you mention without ever having seen it, just as I would have such an opinion of a dictionary published by the Scientologists, the Watchtower, or the Church of the Sub-Genius. If I could find a copy here, tho', I would gladly check it out and admit immediately if my prejudice were unwarranted. My guess is that it is long on beautiful color pictures and short on scholarship. I have several books on the Dead Sea Scrolls and I was not aware that a copy of Daniel dating so early had been found. I am not saying that it is not true, just that it is news to me and I would like to check it out further. In any case, the Jews included Daniel with the Writings rather than with the Prophets for the very reasons you mentioned, and that classification is not likely to change. Anyway, getting to the references, here are what I consider some of the most interesting ones I could find. I think we will agree that many books discuss the same subject in more-or-less the same terms without one being an allusion to the other. These 'chance' similarities I have tried to cull out, so that what remains are, to me, rather obvious, or at least very probable, allusions to the deuterocanonical books. First, some dates, once again not my opinion but a concensus of Catholic and 'mainline' Protestant scholaship: Wisdom of Solomon is thought to date from the first century BC. Ecclesiasticus (generally referred to as Sirach in references to prevent confusion with Ecclesiastes) dates from about 175-180BC, putting it on the 'borderline' of the cutoff for Hebrew canonicity. James' letter dates around 100AD, too late to have been written by either Apostle or the 'brother of the Lord'. The following are all from the Letter of James: The follwing are from Hebrews: The first and third of the latter group are especially interesting. In Heb1:2-3, the author substitutes Christ for the 'Spirit of Wisdom' (Holy Spirit) of WS. In Heb11:2ff, this 'list of heroes' is, as far as I know, found nowhere in the protocanonical OT (though of course the 'heroes' are referred to separately), yet both Sirach and 1 Maccabees have the list as such. Finally (for now - I'll provide more if you wish), a striking example from Acts: Regarding Fundamentalism, to me it has two components: 1. Asserting that the Bible is literally true in matters not directly related to our relationship with God, for example astronomy, biology, and the other sciences, and history. This is contrary to reason. 2. Asserting that man is saved through 'faith alone' or by following some other shibboleths or catch phrases, which are seldom explained, or whose explanation varies from sect to sect and even person to person. This is contrary to Christ's entire ministry. To me, the essence of Christianity is to follow Christ's teachings and to try to model one's life after His. In both of these endeavors, of course, the Christian will always fall short, but the important thing is to fight the good fight and keep trying to the end. If a person says that s/he is 'saved by faith alone', and exhibits that faith by living in imitation of Christ, then I regard that person also as a true Christian regardless of their sect.
