Re: scriptures about music

Firstly then, let's understand that neither reading the newspaper nor playing instruments is being characterized as inherently bad or evil or sinful. Some things are inherently bad (stealing) but this is about context. What is good in one place and time may not be good in another.

As such, where I'm coming from, my basic answer to questions one and three is that this would be bad. That is based (briefly stated) on the belief that God is real, that He has spoken in a clear and specific way, that His message is accurately presented to us in the Bible, and that the design and purpose of the church and its activities and functions are His to define, and no one elses. We know, from the Bible, what God wants the church to be and to do. Much more could be said about that, and scriptures cited, and perhaps we will do that later. The following scriptures (and indeed all of the New Testament) are really only meaningful if it is up to God what His church does, and not if in fact the church decides what it should do based on what I (or we or they) like or enjoy or want, rather than what God has said.

A reference to Jesus and the disciples, before his death (and so a pre-Christian experience):

Matt 26:30 When they had sung a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives. NIV

General instructions for the church about music (singing):
Eph 5:19-20 Speak to one another with psalms, hymns and spiritual songs. Sing and make music in your heart to the Lord, always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Col 3:16-17 Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom, and as you sing psalms, hymns and spiritual songs with gratitude in your hearts to God. And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.

1 Cor 14:15 So what shall I do? I will pray with my spirit, but I will also pray with my mind; I will sing with my spirit, but I will also sing with my mind. (NIV)

General instruction for believers about music (singing):

James 5:13 Is any one of you in trouble? He should pray. Is anyone happy? Let him sing songs of praise. (NIV)

The example of Paul and Silas:

Acts 16:25 About midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the other prisoners were listening to them. (NIV)

Quotations of prophetic statements about music (singing) in the New Covenant:

Rom 15:9-11 so that the Gentiles may glorify God for his mercy, as it is written: "Therefore I will praise you among the Gentiles;
I will sing hymns to your name."
Again, it says, "Rejoice, O Gentiles, with his people."
And again, "Praise the Lord, all you Gentiles,
and sing praises to him, all you peoples."

Heb 2:12 He says, "I will declare your name to my brothers; in the presence of the congregation I will sing your praises." (NIV)

Visionary images of musical praise in Revelation:

Rev 5:8-9 And when he had taken it, the four living creatures and the twenty-four elders fell down before the Lamb. Each one had a harp and they were holding golden bowls full of incense, which are the prayers of the saints. And they sang a new song:...
Rev 5:11-12 Then I looked and heard the voice of many angels, numbering thousands upon thousands, and ten thousand times ten thousand. They encircled the throne and the living creatures and the elders. In a loud voice they sang:...
Rev 5:13 Then I heard every creature in heaven and on earth and under the earth and on the sea, and all that is in them, singing:...

Rev 14:2-3 And I heard a sound from heaven like the roar of rushing waters and like a loud peal of thunder. The sound I heard was like that of harpists playing their harps. And they sang a new song before the throne and before the four living creatures and the elders. No one could learn the song except the 144,000 who had been redeemed from the earth.

Rev 15:2-3 And I saw what looked like a sea of glass mixed with fire and, standing beside the sea, those who had been victorious over the beast and his image and over the number of his name. They held harps given them by God and sang the song of Moses the servant of God and the song of the Lamb:... NIV

I will cautiously offer a single comment here that in the imagery of Revelation the temple incense correlates with the prayers of the saints, and the harps (given by God to every singer) correlate with the heart, as in Ephesians 5:19 above.

A final passage to reflect upon:

Heb 13:15 Through Jesus, therefore, let us continually offer to God a sacrifice of praise-the fruit of lips that confess his name. (NIV)
Since the request was for the scriptures, I'll not comment further yet. Look them up, consider them in their context. These are the passages in the New Testament that describe and command the music of the church, and God's worthiness of all our praise.
