Audio messages are very powerful, and visual imagery even more. The combination of the two certainly leave permanent impressions on us, especially when repeated over and over.
It is my belief that according to the scriptures regarding those things that are pure and holy and expedient that those things the world itself has branded as damaging cannot be justified for Christian consumption. I consider it an error for a Christian to subject themselves to and support the content of R rated movies. In fact, with rare exception the
same is true of PG-13, a category invented to expand the audience for inappropriate material. My answer on R rated movies, no matter how well reviewed or how attractive the premise, is simply "no." Many believers do not agree with me, and I am sometimes appalled to hear references to
graphically awful movie content in lessons and table talks, and have realized that sometimes my only choice is to excuse myself from
conversations, having already expressed my convictions, when brethren persist in celebrating their experiences in viewing things they should never have consumed.
Video games are more tricky simply because I am not thoroughly familiar with the way the ratings work, but most likely an M rating means it is not acceptable content.
Frankly, there are lots of entertaining games that don't require compromise with unacceptable content or themes.
I have not always used good judgment in these areas of entertainment, but having erred serves to make my convictions stronger. I realize that every image I have ever viewed has left its mark on me, left its residue in my mind, and affected the way I see people and respond to situations.
"Shall we continue in sin that grace may abound? God forbid!"
