Great thoughts, Charles. Have you ever read the book "Point Man" by Steve Farrar on this subject? I really like his analogy of the "sixth man" at the changing of the guard in England. Some tourists asked the commanding officer what the sixth man standing out at a distance was supposed to be doing. He didn't know, and it turned out, even the sixth man didn't know. (After some research, they found that he was the guy that used to hold the horses.) I think a lot of fathers today, Christians included, are the "sixth man," with feminism having stripped them of their sense of purpose and duty when it comes to being the spiritual leaders of their homes. By simplifying manhood to just mean bringing home a paycheck--if that--we just end up complicating things for our families. I just finished going through this book one chapter at a time with the guys out here in Idaho, and we really liked it. He delves into being a good father, husband, and leader of the home. Of course, I've never read a book I liked 100%, but I'd still recommend it. Here's a brief book review with links to some discussion outlines I prepared.
