Dear Friends, The Lord gave Roman Wanasen and me a very uplifting two weeks in London and I arrived home safely last night in St. Louis. We thank you for your prayers for us. I am writing to thank you and let you all know that I arrived home safely, and the following is a short description of our trip. Brother Roman Wanasen, who we all know as "Roger", is a part of a large family composed of 9 brothers and 3 sisters. "Roger" is the third child in the family. His two older siblings live in London not far from each other: a sister, Tess, and a brother, Rogelio, or the original "Roger". So that you will not be confused in this letter, I will refer to them by their real names. We were invited by Roger to come to England to help them start a congregation and concentrate on their family and the Filipinos they know in London, who are not a few. We talked about it for several years and just now were able to carry out the plan, thanks to the grace of God and the kindness of our brethren. I left the U.S. on August 12th and arrived late at night in London. Roger Wanasen met me at Heathrow Airport along with another brother, Robert Wanasen, who lives in Spain but came to London to take part in our abors and to learn more about the Bible. He is also taking an English class while in London to improve himself. They greeted me warmly then led me to the Underground where we took the Picadilly Line to the Wood Green station (about an hour's ride) located just a couple of blocks from where Roger & Patty Wanasen live at 6 Temple Terrace, Vincent Road. I was welcomed to their home very kindly in typical Filipino fashion. Their two sons, Richard & Jason, are well-mannered young men who are also members of the church. By the time we had a meal and short get-acquainted visit, it was after 1 in the morning and so they took me to the flat where Roman and I would be staying for the two weeks on 57 Burgoyne Rd. to rest for the night. While I rested there for a few hours, they went back to Heathrow Airport to pick up Roman, and then they came by to pick me up about 10:30 on Tuesday morning. Over the course of the next two weeks, we had Bible studies with the Wanasens' , Robert Wanasen, Leo & Joselyn Mina (Joselyn is one of the Wanasen sisters who has recently come to London from Spain and not sure how long they will remain), and various other friends and acquaintances, mostly Filipino. We were thankful to be able to teach many lessons, and most of them directly benefitted Roger, Robert, & Leo. Richard brought several friends on the first Lord's Day and we had a long study with them in which they asked a lot of questions about the Bible and issues of this life. This was one of the highlights of the trip for us to be able to see young people who are unaccustomed to the Bible actually hold one in their hands and look up references. We are praying that the good seed will find a few good hearts and bear fruit someday. The first Lord's Day (August 18) was a wonderful day as we had 22 attend the morning service. There were even more who came through the rest of the day to either socialize or to study. Sister Patty estimated at least 50 or more during the course of that day. The second Lord's day we didn't have as many, but it was a better day because it began with the baptisms of three souls; Rosalina ("Sally") Dela Pena, Rosslyn Fabellar, and Evelyn Brown. Rosslyn is the girlfriend of Richard, and she risked much by being baptized since her mother is not at all thrilled with her questioning the Catholic church. This is even worse, to her mother. But we are encouraging her to honor her mother and be a good daughter so that maybe her mother can be changed as well. Evelyn Brown is a Filipina who married Marcus Brown, an Englishman who studied with us on both Lord's Days and one Saturday. Though he doesn't really know what he believes, I think we made progress with him. When I first spoke with him, he referred to belief in Satan as "rubbish", but he toned down after a while and seemed to listen more carefully, while he insisted on maintaining his "open-mind". It would be a wonderful thing if he was converted from his "open-mindedness" to the truth that is in Christ. He and Evelyn have a little boy, Jake, who enjoys hearing his father read Tommy the Steam Engine books. We made contact with another congregation in London on Ossulston Rd. that Richard Owens recommended to us. David Cambridge is the brother who works with them and we had a good visit on the phone. We have recommended that the Temple Terrace brethren study with them on Wednesday nights if possible, to aid their spiritual growth. It would also be good to follow-up with another visit to these brethren sometime soon. I am thinking that since Louis Garbi & Rick Sparks are planning to go to the Philippines next year that maybe I should not go there as originally planned, but instead go back to give further help to the brethren in London. We will see what my elders think about the situation and then proceed from there. But these brethren will definitely need more teaching, though they are zealous and faithful with what they have right now. This didn't turn out to be a short description, but I hope it describes the best parts of the work in London. We did get to see some of the historic and impressive sights of London, as well as get a feel for the international flavor of the city. Please continue to pray for these good brethren as they strive to be faithful to the Lord. Thanks again to all of you for your love for them and for me. Brotherly love, Tom |
