With the recent release of book four in paperback I have been reading more and more about the famous boy wizard. Much of it has been those who have decided that it is evil and teaches paganism. I dont tend to agree with that kind of extremist view, but there are some fair points. The boy does in fact use magic. And the bible is as clear as can be when it comes to magic. Magic is evil. Sin, bad, no good, etc, etc. I just don't see anyway around it. True, he does use of for good, but can you ever really accomplish good by using evil for the tool? Doesn't that cancel it out? And what's more, is it not dangerous to idolize (dangerous word anyway) such a character? Parents always seemed concerned about heroes like Batman (my fave), because he is so violent, or James Bond because he kills with ease and is a womanizer. But how is their sin any worse that Harry's? I dont see how it is. And what is worse, with a character like Batman, you see cleary the violence, it is not portrayed as pretty or fun, just violent. Harry makes magic something innocent and silly, when it is neither of those things. Are fans of Harry, myself included, rationalizing for the character because we like him while we toss stones at Britney Spears? Our perception of acceptable may waver or change, but the bible is clear, magic is wrong, as is violence, being overtly sexual, and a truckoad of other things we condemn in other heroes or characters. Any thoughts?
