Re: Some thoughts on rebaptism

I have read your email and feel that we have no business questioning where
or by whom your grand-nephew was baptized. Baptism is by immersion in water
for the forgiveness of sins in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy
Spirit. No where in the scriptures does it require that the baptism be done
by any certain individuals or in a body carrying a certain name. Paul
implies in I Corinthians that baptism did not need to be done by certain
privileged individuals. It is probable that as time went by, baptism was
done by bishops. However, I know of no biblical requirement for this.
Baptism is between God and the individual. To add requirements to it is
denominational thinking at best and heresy at worst. Paul in Galatians
warned that those who add anything to the gospel will be eternally
condemned. These are very strong words. The gospel taught by Paul and
eluded to in Galatians was one of salvation by faith in Christ. (Faith is
more than belief (see James 2). Paul within Galatians implies that faith is
accepting the sacrifice of Christ, baptism, and living by the Spirit.) I
fear for anyone who requires baptism by the right people. What is worse is
that requiring re-baptism because he was baptized by the "wrong" people may
drive him from Christ. Jesus said in Matthew 18 "But if anyone causes one
of the little ones who believe in me to sin, it would be better for him to
have a large millstone hung around his neck and to be drowned in the depths
of the sea." It seems to be to confuse and discourage a "babe" in Christ so
that he loses his interest in God by adding requirements to the gospel is
condemned in scripture.

May we teach only that which the bible teaches and not burden other with
rules of men.

Ted
